Websites: Meetup for Artists and Meetup for rEject Filmmakers Online networking websites are for people who have similar tastes and hobbies and want to meet others to discuss their common interests online as well as in reality. Meetup.com is based in New York, USA but is operating internationally on the internetwork. Meetings can be arrange in advance by the organizers and posted for members to rsvp attendance or not. Anyone can start a Meetup and organize for a small fee. Joining is free for members although some Meetups may ask for a small fee for entry to a film, meal, show. Monthly Meetups are the best way to arrange physical meetings between serious members. It can be a challenge to find spaces for the meetings but some people will use their own homes, studios, or find a business such as a coffee shop willing to be the host space. Others go to events and films and shows and meet in public. Thanks to the internet, communication is quick and cheap by email, message board, postings, and scheduling has online calendars which members can see. Meetup for Artists and Filmmakers happens on the last Sunday afternoon of each month at studio i garage in Toronto. Members are artists and filmmakers of various levels who can meet to discuss their hobby or profession and eventually collaborate for future events. Many are often solo and independent but it does help to meet others in the same occupation to find out how they do it in the city to promote themselves and get contracts. Some are able to make a living from the arts and film industries and can give advice on how they do it. Others are only hobbyists and amateurs who do it for the simple enjoyment of it, not for profit yet. For those with talent, it helps to be persistent and to meet those who can help further your career. The Meetup can be used for socializing too, just for the fun of meeting others with the same hobby. At whatever level, this Meetup is open to all and is something meaningful to do on a Sunday afternoon in Toronto on the downtown east side.
