Wet Brain II Art Show Party
Art and Alcohol
OFFLINE

The art world attracts creative people with imagination who are then trained to express their minds with various media, painting, sculpture, ceramic, film, music, poetry and prose, etc.  Sometimes a few artists fall under the influence of alcohol and drugs and create works while under the spell.  Those with talent will continue to have talent despite being inebriated or addicted, but the content can sometimes become illogical and delusional.  The "Wet Brain" (Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome) is a state of mind wherein alcohol influences or affects the mind's functioning. Maurice "Action" Guilbert titles his past 2 shows under it.  He started out in the art circles as a social butterfly attending hundreds of openings, which offer free alcohol and appetizers, going to and from New York and Toronto.  Graffiti and cartoon art has become his way of expressing his imagination while under a 'wet brain' condition.  Some of his smaller pieces are done in the same night quickly.  The Opening Parties were well attended by his friends and other artists.  Like most opening receptions, free alcohol and appetizers are served to make communication easier loosening inhibitions and shyness.  Not every artist becomes an alcoholic or drug addict but the few who do can affect the stereotype image of artists as freedom-loving but unprincipled people.   The standard art opening reception in art galleries with free alcohol is a temptation to indulge in such mind altering and behaviour changing lifestyle, ditto art schools with their open schedules and nude figure model classes.  For art and beauty's sake, it is allowed but what if corruption of character becomes the end result?  It is a wonder that some artists remain uptight and conventional with all the freedoms in the art scene!  Those who indulge in it for pleasure and those who do become addicted and self-destructive are sometimes the same artists.  But some artists have credited drink or drug as a stimulus to some of their songs and paintings.  Alcohol has ruined enough drinkers, not only artists, that Liquour Control Board Ontario controls its sale and licensing in bars, clubs, special events, including galleries.  Every bad habit can destroy its user but if controllable, alcohol does make the social events more fun.  But does it make some artists more creative too?
